FREMONT, Calif. (Diya TV) — Fremont’s next Mayor will be Raj Salwan, who has served for eight years on their City Council. He topped former City Councilman Vinnie Bacon and two other candidates, Rohan Marfatia and Hiu Ng.

Salwan, a Fremont native and veterinarian, is known for his moderate take on politics and impetus towards fiscal responsibility. Among the key issues facing Fremont, which his campaign hammered into public view, are homelessness, affordable housing, and public safety. “People want a problem-solver,” Salwan said. “We have so many issues now, whether it’s homelessness, public safety, or quality of life. I think voters are looking for someone who is hands-on and committed to addressing these challenges.”

Fremont, with a population of 230,000 — the fourth-largest in the Bay Area – is a burgeoning hub of the tech and biotech industries, but faces increasing concerns with housing prices and rates of homelessness. The incoming mayor will need to balance issues while continuing to support and encourage local businesses and general funds amounting to around $276 million.

Voters in Fremont chose new members of the City Council as well. According to unofficial results, Teresa Keng, Yajing Zhang, and Raymond Liu will represent Districts 1, 5, and 6, respectively.

Restaurant owner Keng has been vocal about her support for small businesses, while Zhang has been an advocate for causes ranging from education reform and public services. In the last eight years as a member of the Fremont Unified School District board, she has operated on those priorities.

Salwan succeeds termed-out Mayor Lily Mei.
