LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Lucid Motors took the wraps off its new model, the Gravity SUV, at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2023, as it continues to seek to build up its electric vehicle offerings. The seven-seat luxury electric SUV competes directly with Tesla’s Model Y, which has been one of the brand’s most successful models, and offers up to 440 miles of range while focusing on space and performance. Lucid’s Gravity comes as a larger family of vehicles and more passenger space, which the company follows up on after the huge success of its Air sedan.

“Gravity embodies all of our learning, the next generation of our tech, and all of our loving attention to detail,” Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson said during an unveiling. Gravity SUV is another key moment for Lucid that will redefine the electric SUV market.

Lucid announced on December 5 through X the Casa Grande factory in Arizona marked the official start of Gravity SUV production. Lucid took to social media to mark the occasion, with Rawlinson riding in the passenger seat as the first Gravity SUV rolled off the production line, to the cheers of factory workers marking the moment as a new chapter for the business.

Despite the excitement, the company has yet to say when the Gravity SUVs will hit customers. Lucid has confirmed that lower-priced trims of the SUV, including the Touring, will not enter production until late 2025, with higher-volume production expected in 2026.

Lucid is relying on the success of the Gravity as the company has been experiencing low sales of its Air sedan. Lucid only expects to produce 9,000 units of the Air sedan by the end of 2024, which is less than what was initially targeted. The luxury SUV priced at $94,900 is a critical vehicle that will help Lucid reverse its financial woes.

The automaker incurred a net loss of $950 million in the third quarter of 2024, with similar losses incurred in the previous quarters. The company’s financial survival is highly dependent on Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which has provided cash injections, including $1.5 billion earlier in 2024.

Lucid Motors is planning to launch a midsize SUV with a price of less than $50,000. It aims to compete with Tesla’s Model Y. However, it does not expect the model to start production before late 2026.
