NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, cautions Indian parents on letting their children go for a study tour to Canada with two concerns. According to him, these two big concerns are the strengthening network of some groups associated with Khalistan-related terror elements and the deteriorating state of affairs regarding the rights of international students in the country.
Speaking at a forum, Verma expressed alarm at the increasing instances of exploitation of international students, mainly those from India. Many students, whose families usually take out loans or sell property to fund their education abroad, face severe difficulties once they arrive in Canada. Some fall prey to dishonest educational institutions or face insecurity of jobs, which cause immense distress.
He also acknowledged that, unfortunately, some students have died in some cases due to overdose of drugs and suicides. The Sikh community in British Columbia had reported more than three dozen deaths of Indian students since 2021.
Verma said that tensions between India and Canada are already running high as there have been allegations made by India against the non-action of the Canadian Government against groups related to the Khalistan movement. Indian parents are asked to be watchful before taking any decision regarding their children’s foreign studies.
The Canadian government, who has been receiving heavy criticism for their policies, have now put up two years of admission restrictions to foreign students to handled the existing influx of international students. Educational institutions have also been advised to take the lead in handling quality-of-life issues for students.
Canada is the most popular country where Indian students are migrating for higher learning.
