NEWARK, N.J. (Diya TV) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained both undocumented residents and U.S. citizens, including a military veteran, in a raid at a Newark business on Thursday. The agents reportedly failed to produce a warrant during the operation, drawing criticism from local officials who called the action a violation of constitutional rights.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, condemned the raid as a breach of the Fourth Amendment. He expressed particular outrage over the detention of a U.S. military veteran, whose military service documents were questioned during the encounter. The mayor said in a statement that the city would not “stand by idly” while residents were “unlawfully terrorized.”
The raid comes as President Donald Trump has ramped up enforcement efforts targeting undocumented immigrants, following a series of executive orders issued on his first day in office. Baraka’s administration, which had previously declared Newark a sanctuary city, pledged to challenge these actions and stand in defense of both human and civil rights.
The operation has been confirmed by sources within ICE. Those individuals contacted would not immediately respond to questions for comment regarding whether or not the raid was illegal. Advocates locally and other organizations within the community have organized a press conference for later.
Neither the identity of the business nor much information on those being detained in connection with this operation has been reported to date.
